REPUBLIC member showcases women in the arts for Alpha Girls

Alpha Girls is an organization that strives to manifest the greatness of women around the world by highlighting the many accomplishments of women in society. The group focuses on cultivating the talents of young women in order establish women leaders for tomorrow.

REPUBLIC's Lauren Culbreth will be acting as the group's Global Director of Art. Her goal is to help bring this mission of positivity and equality beyond the board room and aid in fostering female leadership within the art community around the world.

Alpha Girls mission explains: "With young women growing into tomorrow's leaders, they can enable women in leadership with their collective intelligence, creativity and actions. This powerful bridge between Alpha Girls and Female Power Network can shape tomorrow's living standards for women globally. It is our greatest aspiration that our daughters will experience their lives with vigor and respect for their identity. This celebration and respect for ourselves can start to fill the gap between inequality among men and women in our confidence, history of leadership to top executive compensations."

First Way of the Word series: SUCCESS!

Success! REPUBLIC wants to thank everyone who came out to B.O.A. in the East Village on Wednesday Nov. 11^th for our first Way Of The Word poetry event. Curated by Marissa Forbes, in support of the READ literacy foundation.

It was a remarkable night beginning with an interactive gallery hour featuring work by Edward Hopely, Jason K Tallon, Brian Van Remmen and a journal by Robert Snyderman that documented his journey across America.

Once in full swing, the evening transitioned into one uniquely memorable reading after the other by poets Aldrin Valdez, Khephran Riddick, Peter Ford, Davey Vacek, Katie Przybylski, Lonely Christopher, Robert Snyderman, Marissa Forbes, Brian Van Remmen, and Jason K Tallon.

REPUBLIC wants to thank all of the readers and participants, especially the jazz group Me & Him and DJ Jeffrey Tonnesen for keeping the good vibes rolling on late into the night.

We also want to thank the READ foundation and Bar On A for their time and efforts.

Way Of The Word anthology Vol.1 Edition 1, which includes work by the poets from the event along with many others from around the nation is still available for purchase.

Get Your Affordable and Delicious Eat On!

Jason Isch, REPUBLIC's charity coordinator, has teamed up with his photographer roommate to create a foodie website: Corner Store Restaurateur.

Your prayers for a food blog created and maintained by two painfully handsome, polished young gentlemen have been answered. The two blindingly chiseled chaps we speak of are ourselves; Devon "does this camera make me look fat?" Knight and Jason "is that my finger or the sausage?" Isch.

Their name is complicated but the mission is simple: seek out interesting corner stores, bodegas, "Deli/Grocery's" etc. and create gourmet dishes from their unique wares. Delicious delicacies derived from disparate delicatessens? (They sure love our alliterations.)

Cornerstore Restaurateur is their illegitimate brain child, a child spawned from countless scribbled-on bills, receipts, overdue student loan notices and, of course, a handful of inebriated arguments between its creators.

The boys aim to use your suggestions as their compass, so, if you have any bright ideas on where they should go/what they should cook (or if you just want to say hi) don't hesitate to drop them a line!

The Body Politic: Success!

REPUBLIC Brooklyn and The Brooklyn Art Collective present The Body Politic, started out with a bang and continued to please throughout Saturday night. Those who arrived early received free record bracelets from Wrecords (made by Monkey) and had the pleasure of seeing a breathtaking performance piece by Jennifer Mills. Navigating blindly (literally), Jennifer wore a blind-fold and felt her way through a midst of inanimate household objects hung on clear string from the rafters, stopping occasionally to eat fresh fruit. Every piece in the show, from the three video projection pieces and mixed media installations to photography and paintings, was stunning and provoked much appreciation. Guests were able to see how the artists explored the anatomy, physicality, biology, and substance of the human body; its functions and failings, its fervor and vivacity, in order to extrapolate the idea of using the human body to represent a larger political, philosophical, and social whole.

The enthusiasm of the crowds really sparked as the bands begun perfomring at 9:30 and the dance-party continued as they played on until midnight. ASARanson's energy was infectious, then Buke and Gass slowed the vibe down with some awesome folky tunes. Anamanaguchi got JUNGLE bumping again, playing a few well-known hits and some high energy songs of their own. Guests danced, laughed, mingled, and overall enjoyed the massive space, the art pieces that filled it, and each other's company and rousing energy.

We are lucky to have the space throughout this week, REPUBLIC and Brooklyn Art Collective are putting on an additional Body Politic event on Wednesday June 17 from 8p to midnight. We invite all of those who were unable to make it - and those who were - to come back for more! Then there will be a gallery closing event on Friday June 19. Both events are $10 and will have live music and booze will be available. More information to follow.

REACHING OUT: Gisimba Orphanage

REACHING OUT: Gisimba Orphanage

In the summer of 2008, Chrissie Lam, the founder of Create for a Cause, volunteered at Gisimba Memorial Center in Kigali, Rwanda to work with over 20 children who have been orphaned by genocide, HIV/AIDS and malaria. The picture she paints of her experience there is of a bright hope in the midst of a chaotic and bleak future for the youngest of Rwanda's generations. Filled to capacity, the center is now only able to take in children under special circumstances, receiving about five per year. All of the children are required to go to school and a large number go on to study higher education, making them more able to build normal lives once they become old enough to transition our of the orphanage. The orphanage and its school also prepare the children to reinvest their skills and knowledge back into their communities and to contribute to the hope of a better future for a new Rwanda.

Inspired by Chrissie Lam and the Gisimba Memorial Center, REPUBLIC is proud to present REACHING OUT: Gisimba Orphanage.

As the first in our ongoing REACHING OUT program of recurring charitable fundraising projects, REPUBLIC and Create for a Cause are working together to involve our local communities and New York City, at large, in a campaign to keep Gisimba Memorial Center equipped with the basic necessities it requires to stay in operation. That includes our help in providing the children who live there with education, food, and health care. The proceeds from the campaign will also be distributed through the Memorial Center to support sustainable revenue-generating projects within the Kigali community, such as livestock and agricultural programs.

Friday, May 29th at Le Grand Dakar Restaurant in Clinton Hill Brooklyn, REPUBLIC will host and extraordinary evening of celebration and fundraising with dance performances and music by Indoda Entsha percussion ensemble, food and drinks by Master Chef Pierre Thaim, along with a silent auction and an exhibition of photography by contemporary Rwandan artists.

Come with a full heart but an empty belly! Your financial contribution to this important cause does so much more than help the Gisimba Memorial Center, it also helps to further the reputation of our own community as an example of brother and sisterhood throughout the world. Beyond the frustrations and trials of our individual daily lives, this is an opportunity to reflect on how blessed we truly are and to reach out to the less fortunate with just a small helping hand. Not to pull them up, but to give them the tools to pull themselves up. If we all reach out just a little, we can all make a mighty difference that creates real help and change for the orphans of Rwanda, and for ourselves.

All monetary and silent auction donations are greatly appreciated. REPUBLIC will be collecting donations throughout the entire month of May and into June. Checks should be made out to "Fractured Atlas" with Create for a Cause in the memo line and be sent to Chrissie Lam; auction items should be mailed to Jason Voegele.

MAY 7th = Success!

REPUBLIC would like to offer a whole-hearted thank you to all of the amazing people who came out to support the launch of our website and spectacular art exhibition this Thursday in Brooklyn, down under the Manhattan bridge overpass, at 20 Jay Street. A special thanks to Flora, from Julie Pochron Studios, for her extraordinary generosity, and Julia, from Water Street Restaurant and Lounge, for the perfect swirl of decadence and class at the after party.

Pochron Studios, ideally situated on the top floor, provided a breath-taking view of Manhattan and the bridges; but that was not the only attraction: the art works from the Formation exhibit were all top notch. Lenny Reibstein’s oil paintings and ink sketches were well received, along with Isaac Palatt’s oil on canvas piece. The dialogue created by Jazz-Mihn Moore’s oil on birch panel trilogy, and her acrylic, ink, rain, resin on birch panel piece was vast. Eunkang Koh’s gouache ink pieces were greatly admired, but Joshua Johnson’s Anatural sculptures and William Rhodes’ found object sculptures added the perfect touches to the beautiful space.

The weather was superb, the moon was full, and our new website is now live and ready for visitors, so stop by republicbrooklyn.com often to check for updates on our exciting new events we have planned for May and June. Save the date for Reaching Out: Gisimba Orphanage on May 29th at Le Grand Dakar on Grand St. in Clinton Hill. The traditional live music and dance is set, and a menu has been arranged and the night is guaranteed to satisfy. You'll want to show up with your heart full and your belly empty. All month long REPUBLIC, in cooperation with Create for a Cause and Fractured Atlas, is raising funds for the Gisimba Memorial Center in Rwanda and this event will be the most fun you have ever had doing something so right for the world.

Greetings and welcome to REPUBLIC and all of the interesting things we do. Our last event was Saturday, February 21st at the amazing new event space JUNGLE located at 286 Meserole in Brooklyn and the pictures below are a record of the exhibition, Digital Rituals; New Art in the Fourth Dimension. Digital Rituals was an exhibition of digital video, interactive new meadia and live performance. Artists included, Laura Splan, Mey Veral, Peter Mackie, Tara Hrabowsky, Lucia Jeeson Lee, Jasin Cadic, Reuben Lorch-Miller, Joel Erland, Kate Kaman, Brian Shaw, The Brooklyn Art Collective and more with audio/visual live performances by Bart Woodstrup & Alex Chechile and Public School & Panopticon.
REPUBLIC is currently in production on three new projects beginning with the launch of our new website next month. As a regular visitor to this blog, you can continue to get updates about our other upcoming events like our May fundraising project for Create for a Cause and their African orphanage project. You can also look forward to this summer when we will be coming back to Jungle with a big new exhibition - this time curated by The Brooklyn Art Collective.
