Grand Ave. Block Party: Success!

The block party at Grand Ave. between Lafayette and Clifton was a success! There was a huge turn out for fun and games, face painting, live music, food vendors and free cake. REPUBLIC set up the merchandise and information table right in the middle of the action and we were able to spread the word for Cooke Center Academy and STIMU-A. Here is a photo recap of the event by Sean McGurn:

The winner of the 3 free hours of babysitting REPUBLIC raffle is Jessica Haymen. Marissa Forbes will be babysitting her twins, Camilla and Isa

Save the date: August 13th and join us at PUBLIC HOUSE!

Thursday August 13th from 7pm to 9pm Republic, Ofer Love and the Cooke Center for Learning and Development will be hosting a fund-raising event at PUBLIC HOUSE at 140 East 41st Street in Manhattan.

$35 dollars at the door gets you all-you-can-drink and other treats. The proceeds go to the Transition to Life program at the Cooke Center Academy , a private high school for children with developmental disorders, such as Autism. Over the next several months REPUBLIC and STIMU-A will be working together to produce a series of fund-raising events to support the Transition to Life program and The Cooke Center Academy art program, including a fashion show and a curated multi-media exhibition of work by students of promise at the academy. Several professional gallery represented artists who began life with very much the same types of developmental disorders that the Cooke Center is so effectively helping their students to overcome and manage will also be involved.

Every Thursday evening PUBLIC HOUSE hosts its Charity House contest which rewards the charity cause that can turn out the largest number of people with a grand prize of $3000 to be shared between the cause and the charity organization or team throwing the event. We need all of your support. The Transition to life program receives no state or federal money to operate. It is an essential program for children with special needs to learn how to operate independant lives outside their classrooms and into their adult lives. The money we raise from your generous attendance will go directly to that program and the production of the several other fund-raising projects we have planned for the Cooke Center through December.

PUBLIC HOUSE is a truly amazing space. You can see more pictures and find more information about the Charity House program at http://www.publichousenyc.com

And of course you can find out more about REPUBLIC and all of the other exciting projects we have coming up before the end of the year at http://www.republicbrooklyn.com

The fastest way to get to PUBLIC HOUSE is to take the 4, 5 or 6 trains to Grand Central Station. Exit the station on the south side of the block and PUBLIC HOUSE is on 41st between Lexington and 2nd. For more information, to make a private donation to the Cooke Center for Learning and Development please contact info@republicbrooklyn.com or call 917. 478. 7513.

We need your support and these kids need your generous donations. Come out and help us have an amazing time at the open bar. Tell them you are with REPUBLIC at the door so they can count you for the contest!

Grindcore Gods @ Brooklyn Masonic Temple 07.31.09 - Drew Kassl

The Blackend Music Series is an upcoming new event that will kick off July 31st in Brooklyn, NY with three legendary metal bands, BRUTAL TRUTH, PIG DESTROYER, and REPULSION. This event will also serve as a release party for the forthcoming book, Precious Metal: Decibel Presents the Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces that will see a July 15th release via De Capo Press.

To celebrate their first-ever New York show and the inclusion of their legendary album Horrified inPrecious Metal, REPULSION will be performing the influential release in its entirety. Complete show details can be found below and more information about Precious Metal can be found here.

In the 1980s, Repulsion, from Flint, Michigan, fused thrash, hardcore, and a primitive form of death metal into a sound that was way ahead of it’s time – and became to be known as grindcore. It all came together on Horrified, recorded in 1985 and passed around on cassette for years before officially being released in 1989. The first and definitive grindcore album, Horrified entered extreme music bible Decibel Magazine’s Hall of Fame and is prominently featured in their Precious Metal: The Decibel Hall of Fame book, out in July on Da Capo Press. In addition Decibel Magazine named Horrified the #1 grindcore album of all time. This show marks Repulsion’s first-ever NYC performance, and they will play Horrified in it’s entirety, as a special Decibel Hall of Fame set.

My Personal Favorite.

In the 1990s, no band was as aggressive, innovative, and just plain brutal, as Brutal Truth. Formed in Queens, NY, Brutal Truth defied expectations through the 90s, becoming both more visceral, political, and experimental with each release. The band was dormant for 8 years before reforming in 2006, and released their first album in a decade, the absolutely thrilling Evolution Through Revolution, this year.
This show marks their triumphal return to their hometown.

In the 2000s, Virginia’s Pig Destroyer upped the ante by making the music just plain terrifying. Shocking found sounds and movie samples are interspersed between maniacal blasts of virtuosic, assaultive grind. Powered by the master riffs of guitar legend Scott Hull and the tormented character sketches of lyricist/screamer J.R. Hayes, Pig Destroyer create a shockingly explosive powder keg of pure grind terror. This is their first NYC-area show in four years.

REPUBLIC BROOKLYN HELPS "ART HEAL THE UNBREAKABLE"-Lauren

REPUBLIC was proud to lend a hand assisting fashion designer Yuki Tanaka Chateau de Lion photographer Layla Love in producing a fantastic art and fashion exposition at the National Arts Club on June 24th. The Thursday evening event was a benefit for Layla Love who was diagnosed with multifocal choroiditis, a degenerative eye condition that was causing her to go blind. The proceeds from sales of Layla's photographs and a clothing collection designed by Tanaka will pay for a surgery so Layla will not to lose her eyesight completely.

The space was generously provided by the National Arts Council which was founded in 1898 by New York Times art and literature critic Charles de Kay. The institution hosts a variety of artistic committees in a wide range of disciplines from Archeology to Theatre and Drama. Located at 15 Gramercy Park in the Tilden Mansion, both a designated New York Landmark and a National Historic Landmark, the National Art Club headquarters were a spectacular setting for this event which married photographs of a counter culture downtown mentality with the traditional eloquence of the show's location.

The after party for the event was held at the Baron Showroom at 545 w 54th st. Ms Tanaka's models displayed clothing made from some of the showrooms upholstery fabrics. The garments were ingeniously designed to resemble Victorian era garb with punk rock enthusiasm that seamlessly linked with the sentiment of Ms Love's photographs. The looks displayed won the hearts of the patrons who could purchase the one of a kind pieces as well as limited edition t-shirts made specially for the event by Ms. Tanaka with help from REPUBLIC.

If you would like further information on donating to help Layla save her eyesight you can email layla@lovephotography.org
